Road Diorama 2

I’ve been asked by my animator client to make him another road to the same specifications as the last one, 47” x 90”.

Building the Diorama

This piece is 47” x 90”, the road is made from 10 mm foam board and the pavements are 6 mm. Last night I cut the pieces and scored in the pavement flags and curbs. I cut all the pieces, scored in the pavements and curbs.

Painting the Diorama

I have sprayed all the scored parts with a black spray. Once this had dried, I’ve added the first layer of grey paint. Once this has dried I’ll mix up a lighter grey before adding the washes.

The painting of the second road is going well, overnight I added the washes to the pavements and road, so the next I was able to dry brush the pavements but the road was to dark so a made up a light grey and added a thin layer of it over the road and painted the grates and metallic grey.

For my next steps I’ll highlight the grates, dirty up the road and highlight the potholes before glueing these onto a couple of pieces of 20 mm board.

I’ve been looking at the road and comparing it to the other one I made and realising that the grey I made up was still too dark. Using my airbrush I sprayed a layer of light grey aver the road, once that dried I reapplied the brown wash and added a layer of 20 mm foam board underneath road to give it more strength.

My next steps is to dry brush the road and sand down the edges to tidy them up.
